Leitrim TD calls for extra resources to be assigned to the Sligo Road policing unit

The government has been called out to increase numbers in the road policing unit.

The number of Gardaí assigned to the roads policing unit in Sligo is said have decreased greatly in the last number of years and it's understood that there has been little progress in attempts to address the issue.

165 people have been killed in crashes so far this year, an increase of 29 on this time last year.

The lack of roads policing unit has led to fears that excess speeds and drink and/or drug driving.

Sinn Fein's Transport Spokesperson Martin Kenny says its vital laws are implemented and has called for it to be addressed.
