Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has failed to give a commitment to review the funding mechanism for major road projects like the N17.
It comes as the Minister was handed a bleak warning from the TII that failure to invest in improvements on the road will lead to more fatalities and serious injuries.
The route from Collooney to Knock features in a twelve page document compiled by the TII which was drafted in the context of Budget allocations for roads this year
The brief predicts that there will be three further deaths and six serious injuries along the N17 over the next five years if improvement works are not carried out.
Speaking in the Dail, Sinn Fein's Transport Spokesperson Martin Kenny says the current funding format is leading to big delays on the delivery of such projects.
But responding, Minister Ryan defended the Government approach saying they're being realistic due to budget constraints:
