A look at Sligo's national football league squad 2023

Sligo senior football manager Tony McEntee named a 38-strong squad this week for the forthcoming Allianz Football League Division 4 campaign.

There are 13 new faces from last year - but some things remain the same.

Coolera/Strandhill's Niall Murphy has been appointed as captain with Seán Carrabine (Castleconnor) and Darragh Cummins (Calry/St Joseph's) the vice-captains.

Here are some facts and figures about the 2023 NFL squad:

  • Six members of Sligo's Connacht under-20 championship winning team are included: Jack Lavin, Joe Keaney, Mark Connolly-McGowan, Oisín Flynn, Eoghan Smith and Lee Deignan
  • Seven-in-a-row county champions Tourlestane have just ONE player named in the 38-strong squad - Kenny Gavigan.
  • County finalists St Mary's have the largest club representation of players - 5 - including dual star Gerard O'Kelly Lynch who has committed to the county footballers (instead of the hurlers) for the 2023 season
  • Goalkeeper Aidan Devaney looks like missing at least some of the National League after getting injured before a recent challenge game against Mayo. The other keepers in the squad are Daniel Lyons (Shamrock Gaels) and Jack Teape (St Mary's)
  • Notable absentees: Liam Gaughan, Conan Marren, John Francis Carr, Johnny Kelly, Cian Breheny, Cormac Howley, Pat Hughes (retired).
