Connacht GAA says the recent decision to scrap all pre-season football and hurling intercounty competitions in the New Year is set to cost the province €150,000 in revenue.
The provincial body, in a statement on Friday, claimed their removal will lead to a significant drop in gate receipts, streaming, and sponsorship.
It also means the Council will be cutting the amount of ground rent payable to Connacht counties for senior championship matches next year from 10 per cent to 5 per cent.
The Connacht FBD and Connacht Hurling League competitions have been staged at the Air Dome in recent seasons and have, according to today’s statement, been a significant source of funding for the province.
The GAA took the decision in September to halt all pre-season football and hurling intercounty competitions across the four provinces in 2025 as part of an attempt to ease the congestion of the GAA fixtures calendar.
Council delegates say their abolition, at a time when new football rules are being trialled, will have more negatives than positives – with a surge in challenge matches over the coming months now expected.
