Donegal U20s survive scare to beat Tyrone

Donegal under-20 gaelic footballers survived a late Tyrone rally to reach the Ulster semi-final on a final scoreline of 1-12 to 1-9 in Friday night's quarter-final at Healy Park in Omagh.

The result ended Tyrone's bid for a three-in-a-row of Ulster U20 titles.

Eoin Dowling's first-half goal appeared to lay the foundation for this Donegal win with Ryan McFadden again highly influential.

Donegal led by 1-6 to 0-6 at half-time and they managed to keep Tyrone scoreless in the third quarter to led by seven points by the water break.

However, the complexion of the game changed moments later when a defensive error allowed Tyrone's Rory Donnelly to find the back of the Donegal net.

Two more Tyrone points either side of that goal saw Donegal's lead cut to just two points.

The home side had chances to draw level, but they were guilty of squandering several decent scoring chances.

Nathan Byrne slotted over a crucial score for Donegal in the 56th minute to settle the Tir Chonnaill nerves.

But Tyrone came again and Donegal keeper Daithí Roberts made a fine save in the dying moments to deny the home side a certain goal.

In added time, Johnny McGroddy converted a free to move Donegal three clear.

Tyrone's frustration grew in added time and centre-half back Kevin Barker was red-carded as Donegal held on to set up an Ulster semi-final meeting with Monaghan next weekend.
