Donegal's McGrory to take Rhasidat Adeleke's place on relay team

Donegal sprinter Kelly McGrory will take Rhasidat Adeleke's place on the Ireland 4 x 400 metres relay team at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, after confirmation on Friday that the 20-year-old Dubliner and Irish record holder was withdrawing from the event.

Adeleke, who finished fourth in the individual 400 metres final earlier this week in Hungary, was expected to be part of the quartet is she is the quickest of the five athletes.

However, she admitted after  Wednesday's 400m final that she had dealt with physical issues in recent weeks.

Her withdrawal means that Tir Chonaill AC's McGrory, who was the travelling reserve for the relay team, will now take Adeleke's place on the start line this weekend.

Her  400m season’s best of 54.21 is five seconds down on the 49.20 Adeleke ran to win the NCAA title in June.

The heats of the women's 4 x 400 metres take place in Budapest on Saturday.
