Emma Doherty captains Ireland U19 team in Portugal

Sligo Rovers striker Emma Doherty captained the Republic of Ireland women's under-19 team in Thursday evening's 3-0 loss to Portugal in Luso.

Doherty was given the captain's armband for the second of two friendly internationals against the Portuguese this week.

She played the first 45 minutes of the game before head coach Dave Connell made a number of switches at half-time to give other squad members some game time.

Thursday's loss followed a 0-0 draw against the same opposition on Tuesday - with Doherty the sole player to start both games.

The 17-year-old Buncrana native, who completed her Leaving Certificate last June, recently signed a new contract extension with Sligo Rovers which incorporates a scholarship placement with ATU Sligo.
