There won’t be any easy games for Finn Harps in the 2017 League of Ireland Premier Division and it all kicks-off for Ollie Horgan’s outfit with a hugely difficult opener against Cork City in Ballybofey tomorrow night (kick-off 8.00). Harps survived last year after finishing ninth, but this season that won’t be good enough with three teams being automatically relegated.
The 2016 league runners-up and FAI Cup champions will go into this game as favourites to take the three points. Last season John Caufield’s men won all of their three league games against the Donegal outfit. The visitors have strengthened again ahead of this campaign. Horgan’s challenge has been to replace players like Richard Brush, Tony McNamee, Adam Hanlon, Dave Scully, Ryan Curran, Kevin McHugh and long term injury absentee Keith Cowan.
So it’s been an extremely tough few months for the boss who has brought in the likes of Danny Morrissey, Harry Doherty, Killian Cantwell, Jonny Bonner, Caolan McAleer and Ciaran O’Connor, while Barry Molloy has been persuaded to come out of retirement.
Earlier this week there was the news that former Celtic and Northern Ireland international Paddy McCourt had been added to the squad. So there has been a lot of additions in terms of attack minded players so Horgan will be looking to them to provide the threat as his charges look to defy the odds once more.
In team news Horgan has doubts over midfielders Gareth Harkin and Sean Houston both of whom have taken only a very limited part in the team’s preseason programme. A decision on the pair’s availability won’t be taken until just before the game. “We couldn’t have got a tougher start than Cork City who are a top side. John Caulfield has strengthened his squad significantly and they will definitely be in with a big shout to win the league this year. We lost three times against them last year so that shows you what we are up against” Horgan said.
The last meeting between the clubs took place in atrocious conditions as the heavens opened at Turner’s Cross back in October last year. On that occasion goals from Kevin O’Connor and Stephen Dooley were enough to give the hosts the points.
