IT Sligo’s Men’s ‘A’ soccer team have advanced to the semi-finals of this year’s CFAI Perpetual Cup following a three goals to one victory over fellow north-west college Letterkenny Institute of Technology on Thursday afternoon.

Colm Jinks’ charges took the lead on ten minutes with midfielder James McGrath finding the back of the net.

The hosts drew level only five minutes later before the 2020 runners-up responded with goals number two and three. It was James McGrath once again who was troubling the Letterkenny defence and the Kiltimagh native produced two excellent finishes to seal a first half hat-trick.

IT Sligo held firm in defence in the second half to book their spot in the semi-finals at a date, time and venue to be confirmed.

They are the second IT Sligo Men’s soccer team to qualify for the semi-finals of their respective competition this week. The Men’s ‘B’ team defeated Waterford Institute of Technology in the CFAI Challenge Cup following a penalty shootout in Athlone on Tuesday.

IT Sligo and LYIT will be playing under the same University name from next year following the creation of the new Atlantic Technological University, which also includes GMIT.

However, the three institutions will maintain separate sports teams in third level competition.
