MacSharry Park to get FAI 'Delaney' cash

The Football Association of Ireland has agreed to give a €100,000 grant towards the redevelopment of Ray MacSharry Park in Sligo, after previously refusing to pay the money because it couldn't find any paperwork relating to a promise made by former Chief Executive, John Delaney.

The Sunday Times newspaper reports that about €700,000 in grants to various clubs and leagues, money promised by Delaney, hadn't been paid out by the association.

It's understood the 100k for MacSharry Park in Cranmore was one of the largest grants due.

The Sunday Times report claims says the money was promised by Delaney in June 2018 at a civic reception in Sligo in the ex-CEO's honour.

Further grants were allegedly obtained by Sligo-Leitrim District and Soccer League on the strength of this promise, which could have been at risk, if the €100,000 commitment wasn't honoured.

Correspondence from the FAI's new CEO, Jonathan Hill to Noel Kennedy, secretary of the Sligo-Leitrim league, confirmed that €100,000 would be paid.
