Mona McSharry finishes 4th in World 50m breaststroke final

Sligo's Mona McSharry has finished fourth for Ireland in the final of the women's 50 metres breaststroke at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Abu Dhabi.

The Grange woman again improved her personal best and Irish record by clocking a time of 29.59secs.

That was just four hundredths off a medal.

Speaking after the race, McSharry said: “I can’t but be happy with a PB, and I progressed through the rounds, which is great to see of course. Fourth is gut-wrenching, but if you look at it the other way, I was fourth. That’s not horrendous."

The race was won by Anastasia Gorbenko of Israel, who won gold in a time of 29.34 secs.

McSharry still has three more events to come, including her strongest discipline, the 100m breaststroke.

Next up are the heats of the 100 individual medley on Saturday.
