Mona McSharry wins European bronze in Glasgow

Sligo swimmer Mona McSharry has won a bronze medal in the final of the women's 50 metres breaststroke at the European Shortcourse Swimming Championships in Glasgow.

Swimming from lane 8, McSharry set a new Irish senior record of 29.87 to claim third - and a podium finish.

It's her first international medal as a senior swimmer.

McSharry, who trains out of the Marlins Swimming Club in Ballyshannon, was in fourth position at the halfway stage, but produced a superb final 25 metres to finish on the podium.

Ireland has sent a team of 19 swimmers (11 senior & eight junior) to Glasgow this week.

McSharry is also competing in the women's 100 metres breaststroke, the 100 metres individual medley and the 50 metres freestyle events.  The full Team Ireland schedule this week is available here.

The European Shortcourse Swimming Championships continue until Sunday.

McSharry  and her family are currently part of the RTÉ series 'Ireland's Fittest Family’ this year.
