Muireann Devaney joins Athlone Town

Manorhamilton's Muireann Devaney is joining Athlone Town from Sligo Rovers.

The talented north Leitrim teenager was named Sligo Rovers women's under-17 Player of the Season on Sunday - but she's now signed her first senior contract with the midlands club.

There is no senior women's team at the Showgrounds so her move to Athlone presents an opportunity to play senior League of Ireland football next season.

Devaney, who's 17, is a fifth year pupil at St Claire's Comprehensive School, has enjoyed success in various sporting codes.

She has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-17 international level and helped Glencar/Manorhamilton senior footballers to the Leitrim LGFA county title this year, as well as playing for the senior county team.

She also helped St Claire's reach an All-Ireland schools gaelic football final earlier this year, which HAS still to be played because of the Covid pandemic.
