The Portmarnock golfer leads on five-under-par after an opening round of 66.
He is pursued by Max Kennedy (Royal Dublin) by two strokes after a -4 (67).
A group of players are one stroke further back on -3 including defending Champion Robert Brazill (Naas) who closed with three consecutive birdies for a round of -3 (68).
The local challenge is led by 2016 North of Ireland champion Seán Flanagan who is -1 after an impressive 70. Gary McDermott (Carton House) and TJ Ford (Co Sligo) are both at level par.
