Raphoe's Magee announces badminton retirement

Raphoe native Sam Magee has announced his retirement from professional badminton.

Magee, a European Junior Boys' Doubles Champion in 2009 alongside France's Sylvain Grosjean released a statement via his Twitter account outlining the decision.

Across a 15-year career across the sport, Magee was a bronze medal winner on three occasions at the European Games

In Baku in 2015, the Tír Chonaill man teamed up alongside his fellow badminton playing siblings. Firstly, with younger brother Joshua to win the bronze medal and also with older sister and three-time Olympian Chloe in achieving bronze. Sam and Chloe teamed up once again in 2019 in the mixed doubles event, leading to a bronze medal finish.

The mixed doubles pair combined to claim bronze at the 2017 European Championships in Kolding, Denmark.

At the height of their mixed doubles success,  Sam and Chloe were ranked 21st in the world as a doubles team and were winners of an array of tournaments across the continent of Europe.

In the statement released on Twitter, Magee outlined his plans following his retirement: "Excited for the next chapter, and giving back to Badminton in a coaching capacity." It is understood Magee will coach at Marino Institute of Education in Dublin where the Badminton Ireland High Performance Academy is based.
