Norwegian side Viking FK, who ended Sligo Rovers recent run in the Europa Conference League, were themselves knocked out of the play-off round on Thursday night in dramatic fashion.
They conceded an injury-time penalty in the 94th minute at home to Steaua Bucharest (FCSB) to lose 3-1 on the night, and 4-3 on aggregate.
Viking had won the first leg in Romania 2-1 and look well set to progress to the draw for the group stages on Friday.
However, the concession of taht late penalty proved very costly as the Romanians progressed to the group stages.
Sligo Rovers beat Viking 1-0 at the Showgrounds earlier this month in the third qualifying round - but went out 5-2 on aggregate to the Norwegian side after losing the first leg 5-1.
The draw for the group stages takes place on Friday with Shamrock Rovers the sole League of Ireland representatives in this stage of the competition.
