Sligo hurlers search for new manager

Sligo GAA is searching for a new senior hurling manager following the departure of Daithí Hand and his management team.

Hand, along with Peter Galvin, John Doyle, Stephen Whelan, Michael Larkin and Darren Norman, have stepped away following 'a series of events' which, they say, left them feeling they could no longer carry out their management duties properly.

These include: an alleged 'breach of trust' between one selector and the rest of the management group; registration delays in the intercounty transfers of Galway duo Mark and Conor Hannify (whose mother hails from Tourlestrane) to Sligo - and the decision of one club not to make their county players available for Sligo county training in recent weeks.

This is despite the fact that Croke Park has directed this year that clubs have first call on their players ahead of county management teams, until their respective club championships are completed.

It's also understood that the requested player transfers for the Hannify brothers have since been approved.

In a statement released last weekend, Sligo GAA expressed its sadness with the resignations and thanked Hand and his team for their work and achievements with the squad over the past two years.

During their tenure, Sligo hurlers lifted the Lory Meagher and Nicky Rackard Cups in successive seasons.

They are scheduled to resume their 2020 campaign with a Division 3B league final next month against Leitrim, before taking on Derry in a Christy Ring Cup quarter-final.

Daithi Hand and Peter Galvin spoke to Ocean FM Sport's Tommy O'Callaghan about their decision to step down:

Applications for the hurling job with Sligo close this Friday, September 25th, at 5pm.
