Sligo collected their first points in this year's Lidl Ladies NFL thanks to an impressive 3-13 to 2-11 win away to Down in Saval on Saturday Afternoon.
The winners made the brighter opening and were 2 points (0-4 to 0-2) to the good after 13 minutes of play thanks to points from Elaine o'Reilly and Lisa Casey.
A seven-minute purple patch from Down which seen them score 1-2 (Jessica Foy with the goal) to 0-1 had the Red and Black supporters in vocal mood as they enjoyed a 1-4 to 0-5 after 23 minutes of play.
The second-half of the second quarter belonged Sligo and Lauren Boles in particular. The St Michael's player hit 1-3 without reply in a four- minute period as Sligo enjoyed the Lion's share of possesion. Further points from Ciara Gorman and a score from Ruth Goodwin saw Sligo go in at the break leading by 1-11 to 1-5.
The third quarter saw Down come into the game more as they chipped away at the Sligo advantage. Aoife Keown added 1-1 while Jessica Foy and Natalie Mc Kibbin also supplied points to leave the bare minimum between the two after 16 minutes of the Second Half.
Sligo were then awarded a penalty which Elaine o'Reilly converted. That was quickly followed by a point from a free by the same player, which eased Sligo nerves. Down weren't finished yet and another rally courtesy of three pointed frees from Jessica Foy had the game in the melting pot entering injury time.
Two substitutes sealed victory for Sligo as Geevagh's Jemma Breheny found the n et with her Geevagh team-mate Sarah Reynolds adding a point to see Sligo record their first win under new joint-managers John O’Hara and David Curran.
Sligo's next league game will be against Wicklow next Sunday, March 3rd in Cloonacool.
