Sligo win New York senior football title

Sligo regained the New York senior gaelic football championship title on Sunday night with a narrow 2-11 to 1-13 victory over holders St Barnabas at Gaelic Park.

Barnabas, a team made up almost exclusively of indigenous American players, were bidding for a three-in-a-row of New York titles but Sligo emerged victorious by a single point to regain the title they last won in 2017.

The winners included several Sligo natives including goalkeeper Vinny Cadden (Coolera/Strandhill), Darragh McConnon (Calry/St Joseph's) as well as the St Pat's trio of Jim Davis, Paul Kelly and Colin Kane.

Curry's Niall McDonagh also starred at midfield.

Organisers of Sunday's New York final had 10 candles lit and on display at Gaelic Park in memory of the victims of the Cresslough tragedy in Donegal.
