Sligo's Dean Clancy reaches national elite semi-finals

Sligo boxer Dean Clancy reached the semi-finals of the 63.5kg division at the National elite finals in Dublin on Friday evening.

Clancy beat the current under-22 Irish champion James McDonagh from Waterford 4-1.

He'll fight John Paul Hale in that semi-final contest.

Clancy will be joined at the National Stadium next weekend by his elder brother James who fights European Elite champion Gabriel Dossen in the 80kg semi-final on Friday night.

The National Elite Champions are the first step on the road to qualification for the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Boxing's place at the next Olympics is still in some jeopardy as the International Olympic Committee has signalled its intention to drop the sport from the Paris Games because of an ongoing impasse between the IOC and international amateur boxing.
