Sligo's Sean McLoughlin leading qualifier at the 'West'

Co Sligo Golf Club's Sean McLoughlin secured a place in the main draw for the 2023 Connolly's Audi Centenary West of Ireland as the leading qualifier on Wednesday, after carding a fine round of six-under-par 65.

The round included five birdies and an eagle at the par five fifth.

McLoughlin, who's in the middle of this his Leaving Certificate oral examinations this week, claims the Fred Perry Cup as the leading qualifier for the 'West'.

Sean spoke to Robbie Fitzpatrick after his round on Wednesday.

McLoughlin was the sole Co Sligo golfer to qualify on Wednesday with  Shane Underwood (+3) David Dunne (+3), Seryth Heavey (+4), David McDermott (+5) and Niall McDermott (+10) all missing out.

Enniscrone's Conor Ruddy looked to be on course to qualify for much of his round until a 7 at the par four 14th scuppered his chances. He finished with a 74 (+3).

The competition itself is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.

94 golfers teed it up in Wednesday's qualifier, vying for one of 15 available places in the main field.

Play begins on Good Friday with three rounds of strokeplay during Friday, Saturday and Sunday - before the top 16 contest the matchplay stages on Easter Monday and Tuesday.
