Steven Poacher is new Leitrim football manager

Down's Steven Poacher is set to become the next Leitrim senior football team manager.

His proposed appointment was announced by Leitrim GAA in an online statement on Saturday.

This will be Poacher's first senior intercounty managerial appointment - but he has been involved previously with Roscommon and Carlow.

Poacher is well known in GAA coaching circles.

He is Head of PE at St Joseph's High School in Newry and was recently managing St Mochta's, who made the semi-finals of the Louth SFC in his first year in charge.

He has also coached Down underage teams at every level from Under-15 to Under-21.

Ballyshannon native Anthony McGrath, former Fermanagh county footballer Ryan Jones (who was part of the Leitrim U20 coaching team last season) and ex-Carlow footballer Daniel St Ledger will all be part of Poacher's backroom team.

Poacher's appointment follows the controversial departure of Mickey Graham who stepped away from the Leitrim job after just 63 days in charge - to take up a coaching/selector's role with Padraic Joyce's Galway.

That apppointment was confirmed by Galway on Thursday night.

Separately, Barry McWeeney has been confirmed as the Leitrim under-20 football manager for 2025.

Mohill's Danny Beck and Ciaran Kennedy have been appointed as joint minor team managers.
