Mark McNiff's last winner was returned at 33-1 when Miss Ballygally won at Tipperary earlier this month and the Coolaney-based trainer sent out another big priced winner at Navan today when 25-1 shot Barron's Lad sprung a surprise in the REA Gunne Property Carrickmacross Maiden. Just as was the case with Miss Ballygally, Westport rider Conor Hoban was in the saddle and he pounced late down the outside to beat 5-2 favourite Aspar by three-quarters-of-a-length.
