Tributes paid to Ballyshannon's Owen Roe O'Neill

Warm tributes have been paid to the President of Aodh Ruadh GAA Club in Ballyshannon, Owen Roe O'Neill, whose death has been announced this weekend.

The well-known publican had lifelong association with the local GAA club, across both football and hurling codes.

His son Barry, a radio sport producer with RTÉ (and former local Councillor), is the current Chairperson of Aodh Ruadh GAA Club.

In a tribute post on the Aodh Ruadh club Facebook page on Saturday night, Club PRO John Hughes detailed how O'Neill senior was one of the driving forces behind bringing together the towns of Ballyshannon and Bundoran in 1963 to former the legendary Saint Joseph’s club.

They went on to sweep all in front of them, wining senior championship titles in 1965, 1968, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1976.

Unofficial Ulster titles were claimed in 1967 and 1968 before a famous victory over Dunmore McHale's brought an unofficial All-Ireland Club title to the town.

Saint Joseph's went on to claim the first official Ulster title won by a Donegal club in 1975.

Sunday's Division 1 league match between Donegal and Derry will observe a minute's silence in memory of Owen Roe, before throw-in.
