The government have given a commitment to enhance the level of respite services for families of those with disabilities in the local region.

A number of local public representatives met yesterday with the Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Disability, Anne Rabbitte. Parents of young adults that avail of the services and representatives from the HSE Disability Services.

The meeting which was called to discuss the future of respite services for young adults with disabilities in the north west.

Minister Rabbitte has promised the full utilisation of a respite house in Tullaghan, Co Leitrim - this facility is currently used only on weekdays and will now become a seven-day service.

A respite house will also be established in Cloonamahon in County Sligo, at the site of the former residential care centre while in a move long term to address the situation the HSE will apply for planning permission to build two facilities on a site near St Patrick's Hospital in Carrick on Shannon .

Sligo Leitrim TD Martin Kenny says the agreements reached will be advantageous to the families that use the services right across the north west.
